Uttaradit

A province in the North of Thailand bordering Laos, Uttaradit has a long history dating back to pre-historic times. The site of the modern town, then called Bang Pho Tha It, was located on the right bank of the Nan River during the Dvaravati or Lavo periods, prior to Lanna and Sukhothai, when it flourished as a commercial port until King Rama V elevated its status into a province and re-named it Uttaradit, literally the Port of the North.

Uttaradit, which literally means the Port of the North has a long history of commercial importance. Today, the city is a naturally beautiful town and the province contains Queen Sirikit Dam, a 250 km² artificial lake, as well as the world's largest teak tree, which has stood for roughly 1500 years.

Transport

Although a province somewhat off the typical tourist route, Uttaradit can be reached via private car, bus, or train. Once there, it may be easier to get around with your own car, but there are standard forms of local transport available for visitors: i.e. songtaews, motorbike taxis, and tuk tuks.

Getting to and from Uttaradit

  • By Train:
    Trains depart from Hua Lumphong to Uttaradit every day. Contact the Bangkok Railway Station Tel. 1690, 0223 7010, 0 2223 7020 or visit www.railway.co.th for more information.
  • By Car:
    1. From Bangkok, take Highway No. 1 (Phahonyothin Road) and Highway No. 32 to Nakhon Sawan via Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Sing Buri, and Chai Nat, and then use Highways No. 117 and No. 11 to Uttaradit via Phitsanulok.
    2. From Bangkok, drive to In Buri, then turn onto Highway No. 11 (In Buri-Tak Fa route) and proceed to Uttaradit via Phitsanulok.
  • By Bus:
    Air-conditioned busses and non air-conditioned busses depart from Bangkoks Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to Uttaradit daily. Call 0 2936 2852-66 or visit www.transport.co.th for more information.

Getting Around Uttaradit

As in most rural Thai provinces there are typically songtaews that follow established routes around the provincial capital and local busses and songtaews for trips between towns within the province. Songtaews, motorbike taxis, and are usually available for private charter as well.
